There's no explicit borders of different types of digital cameras, but generally, there are cameras for beginners, more advanced ones and professional ones. They mainly vary in the control users have, and of course, in price, too. Digital cameras that can match film cameras are not very common and are extremely expensive.
Digital images are measured by pixels. Most common digital cameras now have images that range from about 2 to 6 mega pixels. Just like CPU capacity and bandwidth, obviously, the larger the number the better, provided that you can afford it.
Adjusting exposure mode is quite a professional job, so most digital cameras have automatic exposures. However, if you really enjoy "researching" on how to do that manually, some more advanced cameras offer satisfying manual controls. Usually, it's from 1/8 to 15 seconds, and sometimes you can set it up according to different environment you're in, like under light bulb or in the sun, etc.
There are many types of extra lens you can add to your camera, but not many people do that. Actually, for common photo takers, using the original lens is enough. Digital cameras also have optical zoom as 35mm-film cameras do, and they usually have additional digital zoom. However, using the digital zoom will lower the image quality.
Most digital cameras have with them editing software. The best among them, I think, is the Kodak's. You can do virtually anything, including casting your photo, adding various effects, adjusting the light, and even creating roadshows and photo album for your pictures, with these software. Sharing is a really important component of digital photography. It is made so much easier and faster. Just by connecting your camera with a computer and get online, your photos will show up everywhere in a few minutes
There's so much about digital photography. The technology is absolutely amazing, and even if you don't understand that, you can still enjoy it! New terms like LCD viewfinder have been around because of the development of digital photography. I just love it!!! :-)
